Winter Sports Wrap Up With Strong State Finishes

A third place team makes the final four at the state finals...a league runner-up finishes tenth in the state...four district champs from one sport and two regional champs in another...27 individual qualifiers to the state finals in wrestling...two individual state wrestling champs...even an eighth-place team winning a district title...

The Flint Metro League finished its winter sports season with several exciting league championship races and several schools making strong bids in MHSAA state title campaigns.
Linden, which finished third in FML wrestling this season, went as far as the state semi-finals before losing to eventual state champ Allegan. This came after four Metro schools (Linden, Clio, Lapeer East and Oxford) had won their districts in wrestling. In the individual wrestling state championships, Holly qualified four wrestlers in Division 1 with Josh Houldsworth finishing 7th at 112 pounds. In Division 2, Clio qualified 3 wrestlers and had one state champ, Vince Lahar at 145 pounds, and one runner-up with Herman Gillum at 103. Lapeer East had 5 wrestlers qualify for states, with Justin Joseph taking third place at 152 pounds. Linden had three individual qualifiers, with Joe Turner taking fourth at 125 nd Josh Freitas sixth at 112. Oxford, with six qualifiers, saw John Logan finish seventh at 215. Swartz Creek's 4 qualifiers were paced by Dave Priest who was champion at 119 pounds and Ed Constable fourth at 145. Fenton and Brandon each had one state qualifier.

In the pool, Swartz Creek's Travis Gordon qualified for the state Division 1 championship meet in diving, and Fenton sent three swimmers to the Division 2 finals. The Tigers' Stephen Congdon qualifed in the 50 yard freestyle, Steve Hoag qualified in diving and Chris Morrison finished 13th in the state in diving.

In competitive cheer, the league's runner-up, Oxford, took a regional title and went on to finish tenth at the state finals in Division 2. Meanwhile, the top two teams in Metro hockey, Brandon and Swartz Creek, won regional titles, with Swartz Creek thumping the Flint area's "mythical favorite" Powers 6-0 in the process.

Volleyball showed extraordinary depth when both the league champion, Fenton, and the eighth place team, Linden, won district championships.
