Spring Sports Mean Spring Weather Concerns

With the beginning of spring sports in Michigan, the possibility of dangerous weather affecting outdoor sports returns. Coaches, athletes, and spectators are reminded of the Game Suspension Guidelines published by the MHSAA and enforced by school administrators and game officials.

If lightning is seen OR thunder is heard, an athletic contest is to be immediately suspended (delayed). The suspended contest may resume no sooner than 30 minutes after the last lightning is seen or thunder heard. If the amount of rain received during a suspension makes the field unsafe for play, the contest will be postponed and rescheduled. If afternoon contests are suspended for longer than an hour and a half, or all-day meets such as tennis and golf league meets are suspended for longer than three hours, the contests should be postponed and rescheduled.

Local school districts may have more restrictive guidelines that require delaying or postponing athletic contests when official weather warnings or watches are posted.

If you have questions or concerns regarding weather safety guidelines for athletics, please contact your school's athletic director.
