Four From FML Are MHSAA Scholar-Athlete Finalists

Four student-athletes from Flint Metro League schools are finalists for 2009-2010 MHSAA Scholar-Athlete Awards. Katherine Pavelich (Flint Kearsley) and Rikki Jarvis (Oxford) are among 24 statewide female finalists for 6 Class A awards. Jordan Macocha (Oxford) and Trevor Black (Swartz Creek) join 22 other male Class A finalists for six awards.

The MHSAA received 1,835 applications for this year's Scholar-Athlete Awards, which will include a $1,000 scholarship for each selected candidate. The program is underwritten by Farm Bureau Insurance. To be eligible for the award, students must have a cumulative grade point average of 3.50 (on a 4.0 scale), and have previously won a varsity letter in at least one sport in which the MHSAA sponsors a post-season tournament. Students were also asked to respond to a series of short essay questions, submit two letters of recommendation and submit a 500-word essay on the importance of sportsmanship in educational athletics.

Class A award winners will be announced by the MHSAA on February 23. Katie Pavelich and Trevor Black were named FML Athletes of the Month earlier this year, and their biographies can be found by going to "Athletes of the Month" in the drop-down menu under "Scholar Athletes" at the top of this page.
